How to join

Who can join Freemasonry

Freemasonry is a multi racial and multi cultural organisation. Membership is open to men who are law abiding, of good character and who acknowledge a belief in a Supreme Being.

If you are interested in finding out more about Freemasonry, with a view to joining, then you can look on the United Grand Lodge of England website, or you can use the Shanghai Tuscan contact details to ask any questions, and we will do our best to answer them.

How to apply to join

If you are interested in joining, then in the first instance contact the Shanghai Tuscan Lodge Secretary  secretary1027@freemasons.london  who will explain the process.  At this stage a preliminary meeting may be arranged for you to meet with one or two members of the Lodge, as an informal session for you to ask questions, and for you to be sure that you wish to proceed with an application.

What happens next

The next stage will be for you to submit a formal application form. If all is in order, a formal interview will be arranged, with a panel of Lodge members, who will need to satisfy themselves that you are eligible and have sound reasons for wanting to become a Freemason, and that you understand the requirements and commitment of membership.

The Lodge members will also need to be reassured that you have discussed your possible membership with your family, and that they are supportive.

By the same token this is your opportunity to interview the Lodge members and to satisfy yourself that Freemasonry is for you.

The Shanghai Tuscan Lodge welcomes membership from any person who fulfils the above criteria.  It may be you are already a Mason with another Masonic Lodge. The Shanghai Tuscan Lodge would dearly welcome you as a guest or a joining member.

To be eligible to join you must:

  • Be a man of at least 21 years of age
  • Be of good moral character
  • Have a personal belief in a Supreme Being (the definition of a Supreme Being is a personal matter for each individual)
  • Decide to become a Mason of “your own free will and accord” without expectation of any material gain or benefits
  • Be loyal to your country
  • Be dedicated to providing for your own family
  • Have a sincere determination to conduct yourself in a manner that will earn the respect and trust of others
  • Possess a desire to help others through community service and universal benevolence
